The human umbilical cord (UC) is a rich source to develop multiple cell therapy applications. Two types of stem cells are present in the UC viz. CD34+ Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSC) used in blood transplant and Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) which has the ability to differentiate into multiple mesenchymal lineages. The advantages for UC as a cell source are that to use them there are no ethical concern, having non-invasive collection and its availability as biological waste. At I3TK, we are planning to set up a Stem Cell Research Center that will contribute to the therapeutic potential of stem cells and provide options for unmet medical needs.
