Two types of stem cells are present in the UC viz. CD34+ Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSC) used in blood transplant and Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) which has the ability to differentiate into multiple mesenchymal lineages. The advantages for UC as a cell source are that to use them there are no ethical concern, having non-invasive collection and its availability as biological waste.
