Non-Communicable Diseases<\/a> (NCDs) form the largest, yet most under-funded, public health concerns<\/a> globally. The onset of the pandemic has caused further delay and disruption in addressing these concerns as health workers and systems have pivoted to COVID-19<\/a> response in almost every country. The last year and half have completely altered the way healthcare is perceived and accessed in India. As the second wave of the pandemic began to recede, several reports surfaced revealing factors that may have increased vulnerabilities and made the crisis far grimmer \u2013 one of them being the impact of NCDs on the ongoing COVID-19 crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People living with any kind of NCDs have been the worst affected during this health crisis. While various reasons led to a spike in the number of infections, the existence of underlying diseases such as diabetes<\/a>, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney diseases among others aggravated the risk of poorer outcomes. A recent Lancet study noted that the death rate among COVID-19 patients with at least one existing health condition such as diabetes or hypertension was 5.7%, as compared to 0.7% in those who were otherwise healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battling the NCD Burden in India<\/strong>
A recent report by ASSOCHAM identified diabetes, hypertension and digestive disease as the top three NCDs followed by respiratory diseases, neurological disorders, heart diseases\/ cardiovascular disease (CVD), kidney disorders, and cancer. The report also highlighted that over two-thirds of individuals suffering from NCDs were in the age group of 26 \u2013 59 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given India\u2019s young population, this is a clear indication of the prolonged burden of NCDs that we will be facing as a country. In fact, in India, 86% of those who suffered from COVID-19 also had comorbidities such as diabetes, chronic kidney problems, hypertension, or heart ailments, thus making them more vulnerable to infection by the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysing The Link Between Diabetes and COVID-19<\/strong>
India, known as the diabetes capital of the world, accounts for one in six people globally with diabetes. The country is home to an estimated 77 million diabetics, however, millions more are likely to be suffering from the disease while remaining undiagnosed. The exponential rise in the number of diabetics is mainly attributed to living conditions including dietary patterns, sedentary lifestyle, blood pressure and increase in body weight. Diabetes occurs as the accumulation of activated innate immune cells in metabolic tissues leads to the release of inflammatory mediators, especially interleukin-1\u03b2 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha, which promote systemic insulin resistance and \u03b2-cell damage. Additionally, metabolic disorders may result in low immune function by impairing macrophage and lymphocyte function, hence increasing the susceptibility of people to complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last 18 months, diabetes has been associated with more complications and poor outcomes in patients suffering from COVID-19. The possibility of COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen support and ICU care is also higher for those with diabetes than those without. Thus, ensuring access to routine and timely healthcare solutions becomes vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holistic management of diabetes during the pandemic involves constant knowledge sharing to enable patient self-care and targeting better glucose control through meal planning, improved cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity. Additionally, consistent pharmacotherapy to address diabetes related complications and achieve necessary glycemic targets are essential.

Building an Ecosystem of Access and Care for Diabetics<\/strong>
The pandemic has been a major disruptor when it comes to healthcare access for diabetics. Limited movement due to restrictions, fears over contracting the virus and restricted access to physicians and laboratories have led to fewer consultations and increased health risks. In such a scenario, encouraging virtual visits and utilisation of telemedicine tools can help foster an ecosystem of continual patient care. In the past few months, various telehealth and digital health solutions have paved the way for convenient interactions between doctors and patients, thus ensuring efficient delivery of vital medical care, remotely. Remote solutions such as live chats, audio and video enabled consultations, remote scheduling of appointments, etc. are all helping those in need gain access to quality healthcare. Patient progress can also be monitored seamlessly through electronic storage of medical records, reports and other essential data. These innovative solutions and engagement platforms have laid the foundation to further develop this ecosystem, transforming it into an extensive, well-connected network addressing all the needs of diabetes as well as other NCD patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the pandemic has renewed the focus on driving favourable healthcare outcomes, continuing concentrated efforts on diabetes and other NCDs will be essential for public health and welfare. This calls for the need to recognize NCD prevention and care as essential aspects of health security. Given the complex nature of diabetes, multiple aspects of the disease need to be managed in cohesion \u2013 from education and awareness building to addressing risk factors affecting patient health and long-term complications associated with the disease. With enhanced support from healthcare institutions, manufacturers, digital solutions and service providers and the government, our healthcare system is in a prime position to build on existing capabilities to provide quality healthcare solutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
