Biobanks have become an important resource in medical research, supporting many types of contemporary research like\u00a0<a title=\"Genomics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genomics\">genomics<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Personalized medicine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personalized_medicine\">personalized medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biobanks can give researchers access to data representing a large number of people. Samples in biobanks and the data derived from those samples can often be used by multiple researchers for cross purpose research studies. For example, many diseases are associated with\u00a0<a title=\"Single-nucleotide polymorphisms\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single-nucleotide_polymorphisms\">single-nucleotide polymorphisms<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genome-wide_association_studies\">Genome-wide association studies<\/a>\u00a0using data from tens or hundreds of thousands of individuals can identify these genetic associations as potential disease\u00a0<a title=\"Biomarkers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biomarkers\">biomarkers<\/a>. Many researchers struggled to acquire sufficient samples prior to the advent of biobanks.<\/p>\n<p>Biobanks have provoked questions on privacy,\u00a0<a title=\"Research ethics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Research_ethics\">research ethics<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Medical ethics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medical_ethics\">medical ethics<\/a>. Viewpoints on what constitutes appropriate\u00a0<a title=\"Biobank ethics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biobank_ethics\">biobank ethics<\/a>\u00a0diverge.
